Calhoun’sThe Copper Cellar Family of Restaurants will collect Christmas cards this week for an 8-year-old girl who survived a house fire and suffered burns over 75 percent of her body. The girl, Safyre Terry, said she has one wish this holiday season: She wants to fill her Christmas card holder with as many cards as possible.

After seeing the story on WVLT News (see story here), Bart Fricks, the Chief Operating Officer for Copper Cellar Family of Restaurants, wanted to help Safyre get her wish. Copper Cellar Family of Restaurants has partnered with WVLT to collect cards from Dec. 14 – 18 at all Calhoun’s, Copper Cellar, Smoky Mountain Brewery, Cappuccino’s, Chesapeake’s, and Cherokee Grill locations throughout East Tennessee.

In May 2013, someone set fire to the upstairs stairwell that led to Safyre Terry’s apartment, killing her father, David Terry, and her three siblings, who were all under the age of three. But Safyre’s father held her in his arms, protecting the young girl from breathing in the hot air – an act that ultimately saved her life.

Safrye lost her left foot and right hand and had to undergo more than 50 surgeries to graft skin over her burns. She now lives with her aunt Liz Dolder.

“Safyre lost everything – her father, her mother, her sister, her brothers, her home, her favorite toy, her favorite outfit – everything that was familiar to her,” says Dodler. “She even lost the one thing we all take for granted – her reflection. But she wakes every morning with a smile on her face. She is the true definition of hope, faith and love.”

On Dec. 3, she shared a photograph of Safyre on Facebook and explained that she wanted cards this Christmas. Over 20,000 people have shared the post, and Safyre’s Christmas wish appears to be coming true.

“The story was so moving,” said Ficks. “I knew that our employees alone could provide well over 1,000 cards for Safyre – and the East Tennessee community has always responded when we asked. We would love nothing more than to send Safyre a mountain of Christmas cards.”

Copper Cellar is asking people to bring Christmas cards for Safyre to any of the company’s 17 area locations and the company will mail them to her before Christmas Day. People who wish can also mail their cards directly to: Safyre, P.O. Box 6126, Schenectady, New York, 12306.

The Copper Cellar Family of Restaurants includes Copper Cellar, Calhoun’s, Smoky Mountain Brewery, Cherokee Grill, and Chesapeake’s. The restaurants are located in Knoxville, Maryville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Lenoir City.
