Scott Stuart:
Owner, The Metropolis

Scott Stuart, owner of Knoxville’s beloved Metropolis Hair Fashions in Bearden, has been cutting hair since three weeks after graduating high school.

“I grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania,” says Stuart, “and I was working at a salon in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Three or four years after barber school, I was in New York at the Jingles Academy—then recognized as the world’s greatest advanced hair cutting center, with locations in Manhattan and London. I fell in love with British hairdressing. I learned about the artistry in our industry.

“Barber school taught me to cut hair off,” adds Stuart, “but my time in New York taught me that every haircut is a beautiful transition—a work of art.”

Stuart opened Metropolis 30 years ago—and today his salon is both a salon and an education center. “Every spring and fall we bring to Knoxville some of the world’s most recognized hairdressers, educators, and stylists,” he says. “Our salon is designed to convert to a forty-seat classroom.”

Adds Stuart: “Education is what sets Metropolis apart from other salons—because education is what drives the bus. It’s like your car. If you’re driving down the road, and you’re low on gas, you have a decision to make: You can run out of gas, or you can pull over and fill up. We have pre-determined fill-up times at Metropolis. We have such energy here!”

American stage and screen actor Muse Watson gets his hair styled by Scott Stuart, owner of The Metropolis.

After the difficulties of the past 18 months, the future is bright for The Metropolis.

“I think our industry is wide open,” says Stuart.

“We’ve just come from ten years of bobs and I’m glad that we see all kinds of color. I think we’re in for a revolution. My goal is to continue to learn and to push the ball forward.

There’s a hair salon on every corner and we know we better be on top of our game. We know if we aren’t, we’ll be left behind.”

The Metropolis and its stylists have consistently been named “Best of Knoxville” and have received local, regional, and national recognitions.

The salon operates under the philosophy that getting a breathtaking hairstyle from the area’s most talented stylists doesn’t have to be an off-putting experience.
